Using Runlines

Does Runlines listen to me and check if I said my line right?

No. Runlines has no speech recognition and never sends your voice anywhere. When it stops at your line, you say it out loud and tap Got it, or tap Reveal if you go blank, which counts as a peek. The off book, learning, and shaky marks come from those taps, so they are as strict as you are. The microphone is used only in Record mode, a Runlines Pro feature, while you hold the record button.

Do the voices sound like real actors?

No. Runlines reads with the text-to-speech voices built into iOS, which are clear but do not act. You can make them sound much better by downloading an Enhanced or Premium voice in iPhone Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices, and choosing it in Runlines under Settings, Partner voice. With Runlines Pro each character can have a different voice.

Does Runlines work without internet or in airplane mode?

Yes. Adding a script, runs, Record mode, and the Progress tab all work offline, because the voices and the PDF reading run on the iPhone. You need a connection only to buy or restore Runlines Pro.

Is there an Android, iPad, or web version of Runlines?

No. Runlines is an iPhone app for iOS 17 or later. There is no Android app, no iPad version, no Mac app, and no web version.

Can I use Runlines to memorize a monologue or a wedding speech?

Yes. When you add the script, turn on "No character names (monologue or speech)". Every paragraph becomes one of your lines, covered until you say it, with the paragraph before it on screen. Nothing is read aloud because there is no other part. Splitting the text into one paragraph per beat or section makes it much easier to learn; the guides on monologues and speeches show how.

Can two actors share a script or rehearse together in Runlines?

No. There are no accounts, so there is no sharing or syncing between phones. Each person adds the script on their own iPhone and picks their own character.

Scripts and files

What kinds of script files can Runlines open?

Pasted text, PDF files that contain text, and plain TXT files. It cannot open Word, Pages, or Final Draft files directly, or photos of pages. For those, copy the text and paste it, or export a PDF first. Character names need to be in capital letters, either as "NAME: line" or with the name on its own line above the speech. See both layouts.

Why does my PDF say "No text found in that PDF"?

The PDF is a scan, which is a picture of a page with no text inside it, and Runlines does not do OCR. Copy the text from the email or document the sides came from and paste it into Add a script. A quick test: if you cannot select words in the PDF in the Files app, it is a scan.

How long can a script be?

In the free version, a script runs its first 40 lines, where a line is one speech by any character; the screen says, for example, "Free plan runs lines 1 to 40 of 48". With Runlines Pro there is no limit on length or on the number of scripts.

The characters came out wrong after I pasted my scene. How do I fix it?

Make sure every character name is in capital letters and either followed by a colon on the same line, or alone on its own line above the speech. Stage directions on their own line should be in parentheses or square brackets so they are skipped. Fix the first few names, paste again, and Runlines will usually pick up the rest.

Privacy and your data

Is my script uploaded anywhere?

No. Scripts are read on your iPhone, lines are spoken by your iPhone, and recordings are saved on your iPhone. Runlines has no account and no server of its own. The only thing that leaves the phone is an anonymous record of subscription purchases, kept by RevenueCat for subscription and trial numbers. The privacy policy lists exactly what that record contains.

Do I need an account to use Runlines?

No. There is no sign-up, email, or password. Runlines Pro is tied to your Apple Account through the App Store, which is why Restore Purchases works on a new phone.

What happens to my scripts if I get a new iPhone?

They move with your iPhone backup. Restore the new phone from an iCloud or computer backup of the old one and your scripts, marks, and recordings are there. If you set up the new phone from scratch instead, they stay on the old phone. Your subscription follows your Apple Account: tap Restore Purchases in Settings.

Price and subscription

How much does Runlines Pro cost?

$7.99 a month, or $39.99 a year with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan. Both renew automatically until you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the period. The app is free to download and the free version includes 5 runs a month. Full pricing.

How do I cancel the Runlines free trial?

Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap Runlines, then tap Cancel Subscription. Do it at least 24 hours before the 7 days end and you are not charged. You keep Runlines Pro until the trial ends. Deleting the app does not cancel the trial.

What happens when I use up my 5 free runs?

Starting a sixth run in the same month opens the Runlines Pro screen. If you close it, everything else keeps working: your script, its marks, and the plan are still there, and your 5 runs come back on the 1st of the next month. The sample scene you ran during the first-launch questions did not use any of them.

Will Runlines ask me to pay as soon as I open it?

No. The first-launch questions end on your Scripts list, not on a price screen. The Runlines Pro screen appears only when you tap a feature with a lock badge, a button on a blurred preview, the Runlines Pro row in Settings, or start a sixth run in a month.
